I’ve been baking more than usual lately. Let’s take a look at a pantry staple we all use and what’s your better options.

We’ve talked about the dangers of aluminum in our antiperspirants and why natural deodorants are the better option. While some think there’s a debate about whether aluminum is directly linked to cancers and dementia like Alzheimer’s, there’s enough there that keeps me from using products with it when it’s so easy to skip. Here’s a study that supports the connection of human exposure to aluminum with Alzheimer’s disease. connection of human exposure to aluminum with Alzheimer’s

Why am I talking about aluminum? Unless you are intentionally looking at your baking powder ingredients, there’s a decent chance you have aluminum in your baking powder! 🀯

When looking for baking powder, look for aluminum free & non-GMO. If corn is in a product, it’s likely genetically modified unless it’s listed non-GMO verified or organic.

You can also make your own and this is the recipe I use. Some say the arrowroot powder/cornstarch is optional, but recommended if making a larger batch. Just know that if you don’t use it, your powder will be more potent than the store kind, so use less!

Make your own:
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp arrowroot powder or non-GMO cornstarch
2 tsp cream of tartar

I haven’t been able to find organic cream of tartar in stores or online at any of my normal places, but you should be able to find organic arrowroot or organic cornstarch, or at the very least make sure the cornstarch is non-GMO.

Happy baking friends!
