Everybody knows sweets like cookies & cakes have sugar, but did you know it’s likely in your everyday staples too? You’ll find sugar in just about everything in your pantry unless you have been actively looking to avoid it. Pasta sauce, nut butters, packaged fruit, crackers, snack bars, and condiments all frequently have some sugar added to it.
Sugar isn’t like the other food groups where there is a recommended amount to have each day. Instead, there are daily maximum recommendations. Unlike vegetables & fruits, less is always better.
Too much sugar can lead to an assortment of issues including Type 2 Diabetes, poor gut health, acne, heart disease, poor dental health, obesity and more.
The American Heart Association has the following MAXIMUM recommendations for daily added sugar:
Men: 9 teaspoons
Women: 6 teaspoons
Children 2+: There wasn’t a recommendation, but it should definitely be less than 6
Children under 2: none
Sugar will be listed in grams on the nutrition facts label. One teaspoon of sugar is equivalent to 4.2 grams.
